One of my favourite treasures that I brought home from our family’s farm is this 1883 “The Farm Account Book.” Inside the front cover, it is dated May 4th, 1910, and signed Clarence P. Duck, Morpeth, Ont. The book is packed with fascinating entries and information, which I hope to document over time.
The title page states, “Farmer’s Friend & Account Book, presenting separate accounts for all farm transactions with yearly balance sheet. By G. A. Reid. William Briggs Publisher, Toronto, ONT., 1893”
The page I’ve photographed above documents various workers’ hours. That page doesn’t have a date, but before it were two similar pages dated 1910 and 1913. The following page was dated 1897, which implies that he got this book from his father – Great Great Grandfather W. J. Duck.
I believe $1 per day was the wage.
