What is the heaviest grain to the bushel? It looks like a tie between wheat, peas, beans, clover seed, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, beets turnips and onions. And it looks like dried apples don’t weight 32 lbs a bushel – someone’s corrected that entry with a pen.
Another interesting thing about this list is that in 1883, corn was still identified as Indian corn, which is the only corn on the list. When I hear that term, I picture the vibrant burnt sienna shades of decorative corn sold in the fall. It is not clear what variety of corn this entry refers to, except to highlight that the crop of corn, which we take for granted today as a staple crop, was something new to the European settlers who came to North America. The First Nations people generously shared their advanced corn agriculture methods, which they had been using for over 800 years, with the settlers.
