Looking good in the 1950s apparently required operating instructions; instructions worth keeping for 70 years. I’ve been collecting some vintage dresses over the past few years, which are quite forgiving in their polyester fabrics, but I can see how some of them may have required a bit more undergarment priming.
I had pulled all of these papers and buttons out when working on a collage recently – haven’t decided whether or not to use this right on it or not. There is something to be said about keeping these original vintage and antique papers, but then there is hording, and carrying on another generation of keeping these papers. I like to think that by using the papers and mementos in my artwork, I am honouring my ancestors more than by packing these items away.
