Family history research: old documents

Today I pulled out the stack of old legal documents in my collection and started sorting them by date. I’ve been hoping to find time to look at these for the past year and a half. Simply handling these documents–some from the mid 1800s–gives me chills. What a sense of history!

old legal documentsIt’s interesting to research the generational saga my ancestors went through to acquire and retain the farmland through the difficult years – especially during the depression. One document lists all of the farm implements and items, including an aged horse, that were being seized against a difficult debt. It is a little bit depressing/sad to read these documents but also inspiring to see the hard work the family endured to keep the farm where I grew up.

I probably won’t share too many of these documents, but stay tuned for a few interesting ones.
